Award Ceremony

The Award Ceremony is the culmination of the EU Contest for Young Scientists.  In the tradition of the Contest, leading dignitaries and high profile personalities from the world of science will be invited to the Ceremony. In the past the Award Ceremony has been honoured by the presence of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany; the President of Finland; the President of Hungary: Dr. Ference Mádel, HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg; Government Ministers Ambassadors and European Commissioners. It is an enjoyable but formal occasion and contestants are asked to dress appropriately. In the past, some contestants have worn national costume, and this is both welcomed and encouraged. The Award Ceremony is followed by an official reception.

If there are limitations of space, then participation might be limited only to the contestants, their escorts, National Organisers and invited VIPs.

This year, the Award Ceremony will take place in “Vinterträdgården” (the Winter Garden) of the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm on September 27, at 11.00-13.00.

The Grand Hôtel

The Grand Hôtel has a long and fascinating history. The hotel was built in 1874 by the Frenchman Régis Cadier and has since been a well-known landmark in Stockholm. Ever since the first Nobel prizes were awarded in 1901 the Laureates have been staying at the Grand Hôtel. This soon became an accepted tradition, which there has never been any reason to change. From 1901 to 1929 the hotel was not just the Laureates’ home. It was also the scene of the great Nobel Banquet, which is nowadays held at the Stockholm City Hall.

Vinterträdgården, the "Winter Garden", was created by the Grand Hôtel's legendary female hotel manager, Wilhelmina Skogh, and its opening in 1909 was a major event in Stockholm. Because of its beautiful interior and great sense of space, Vinterträdgården has become many people's favourite part of the Grand Hôtel.
